"“Without the opportunity I received through Vineyard, I don't know where I would be today. Today, I am pursuing my dream of becoming a teacher and hope to uplift my community.”"
Yvonne Nyambura's story is a powerful reminder that a difficult beginning does not have to determine the future. Sometimes, one opportunity, offered at the right moment, can open doors that once seemed impossible to reach.
In 2023, Yvonne was preparing to join Form One after performing well in her primary school examinations. She had the academic ability and determination to continue her education, but her family's financial circumstances threatened to bring her dream to an end before it could truly begin.
Raised by a single mother, Yvonne came from a family that struggled to meet basic needs. Paying school fees was beyond her mother's financial ability, while difficulties paying rent created additional uncertainty at home. Despite her promising academic performance, the path to secondary school remained uncertain.
Then an opportunity came through Vineyard.
With support to cover her full secondary school fees, pocket money, and transport to and from school, Yvonne was able to enrol in a boarding school and continue her education. She also participated in academic talks and spiritual guidance sessions during school holidays, receiving encouragement to remain focused on her studies and personal growth.
For Yvonne, this support meant more than access to a classroom. It gave her the chance to continue learning, pursue her potential, and work toward a future that had once seemed uncertain.
Through determination and continued support, she completed her secondary education and performed well in her Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations, attaining the grade required to progress to university.
Her journey did not end with high school graduation. Vineyard continued supporting her transition to higher education, helping facilitate her university admission and meet other educational needs.
Today, Yvonne is a first-year student at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa, pursuing a Bachelor of Education (Arts), specializing in English and Literature. She is currently in Year One, Semester Two, and is working toward her dream of becoming a teacher.
Looking back, Yvonne remains deeply grateful for the opportunity she received. She recognises that without Vineyard's intervention, her educational journey might have taken a very different direction. She has seen how some of her peers, facing difficult circumstances and limited opportunities, have experienced different paths, including early motherhood.
Her experience has strengthened her appreciation for education and the importance of creating opportunities for young people to pursue their dreams. Rather than allowing her difficult circumstances to define her future, Yvonne is working toward a profession through which she hopes to inspire others and contribute to her community.
Her dream is to become a teacher and uplift the community from which she comes. She hopes that the education she is receiving today will one day enable her to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
Yvonne's journey is still unfolding. She has not yet completed her degree, but she has already moved from the uncertainty of accessing secondary education to pursuing a university qualification and preparing for a future filled with purpose.
Her story reminds us that when young people receive consistent support, encouragement, and access to education, their circumstances do not have to determine their possibilities.
From a young girl whose education was at risk to a university student preparing to become a teacher, Yvonne's journey is a story of opportunity, perseverance, gratitude, and hope.
At Vineyard, we believe every young person deserves the opportunity to discover their potential and pursue a brighter future. Yvonne's journey reflects the importance of standing alongside students when they need it most—and the possibilities that emerge when someone believes in their future.
