Vineyard CBO Medical Camp reveals the urgent healthcare needs of vulnerable families in Mathare and Huruma and why your support matters.

In partnership with Hope Venture | Hosted at Outreach Hope Church Huruma | 11–14 August 2026

What happens when a mother needs medication but cannot afford it? When a child is struggling with severe malnutrition and no one realizes how serious the situation has become? Or when someone living with high blood pressure goes without regular treatment because the cost is beyond what their family can manage?

For many vulnerable families, these are not distant possibilities. They are real challenges that stand between them and a healthier future.

From 11 to 14 August 2026, Vineyard Community-Based Organization (CBO), in partnership with Hope Venture, brought essential healthcare closer to the community through a four-day medical camp hosted at Outreach Hope Church Huruma.

By the end of the outreach, 1,004 community members had received medical attention.

Behind that number were individuals seeking relief from illness, families searching for answers, and children who needed care. Each person represented a reminder that access to healthcare can make a meaningful difference in someone's life.

But the camp also revealed something important: providing treatment is only part of the journey. For many families, the struggle continues long after they leave the clinic.

Four Days. 1,004 People. One Urgent Need.

The response to the medical camp was remarkable. On the third day alone, the medical team attended to 286 people — the highest single-day attendance since the camp initiative began.

Doctors, nurses, Community Health Promoters, volunteers, church members, sponsored students and other support teams worked together to serve the community with compassion and dedication.

The conditions identified included respiratory illnesses, gastrointestinal disorders, skin diseases, arthritis and chronic conditions such as hypertension.

The medical records included 132 cases of bronchitis, 128 cases of other upper respiratory tract infections, 118 cases of nasopharyngitis and 114 cases of gastritis. The team also recorded 87 cases of hypertension.

These figures tell a sobering story. Many people need healthcare services that are accessible, affordable and close to where they live.

For families already struggling to meet their daily needs, the cost of seeking medical attention can be an additional burden. Community-based medical outreach helps bridge that gap, bringing healthcare closer to people who might otherwise struggle to access it.

And with your support, this work can reach even further.

When Treatment Is Not the End of the Story

One of the most concerning findings during the camp was the challenge of managing chronic illnesses.

Some community members reported difficulty affording regular medication. Others struggled to obtain enough food to support the dietary changes recommended for their health.

For a person living with high blood pressure or poorly controlled blood sugar, a single medical visit may not be enough. Their condition may require regular monitoring, medication, health education and follow-up.

Without these continued services, people can remain vulnerable even after receiving initial treatment.

This is why Vineyard CBO's work cannot end when a medical camp closes.

The next step is to strengthen continuity of care, support vulnerable patients, improve access to essential medicines and help community members receive the follow-up services they need.

Your generosity could help turn a single medical visit into a pathway toward sustained care.

Four Children. One Important Reminder.

Among the most significant encounters during the camp was the identification of four children who needed medical attention.

A teacher brought the children to the medical team after noticing that they were unwell. Two siblings were found to have severe Norwegian scabies, while the other two presented with severe malnutrition and helminthic infestation.

The children were assessed and treated.

This encounter demonstrated why community healthcare must extend beyond the clinic. Teachers, caregivers, schools and feeding programmes can play a vital role in identifying children whose health is at risk.

It also highlighted the importance of continued monitoring. The team recommended regular health reviews, preferably at least every two weeks during school days, to monitor the children's recovery, nutritional status, skin conditions and general wellbeing.

For vulnerable children, early identification and continued support can be crucial.

No child should have to wait until a health problem becomes severe before receiving attention. By strengthening the link between healthcare, nutrition and education, we can help identify children at risk and respond to their needs more effectively.

When you support community health initiatives, you help create opportunities for vulnerable children to be seen, assessed and supported.

The Next Chapter Depends on All of Us

The August medical camp was an important milestone, but it also revealed where more support is needed.

Vineyard CBO and its partners are looking toward a stronger community health programme that goes beyond occasional medical outreach. The aim is to improve early detection, strengthen follow-up and help vulnerable community members access the services they need.

Priority areas include:

• Essential medicines: Helping vulnerable patients access treatment they may otherwise struggle to afford.
• Diagnostic services: Expanding access to eye examinations, haemoglobin testing, blood sugar screening, blood pressure monitoring and additional laboratory investigations.
• Child health and nutrition: Strengthening nutritional assessments, growth monitoring and follow-up for children identified as vulnerable.
• Chronic disease management: Supporting regular monitoring and continuity of care for people living with conditions such as hypertension and poorly controlled blood sugar.
• Referral and follow-up: Improving connections to specialized care and establishing systems to track patients who need continued medical attention.
• Future medical camps: Helping bring healthcare services closer to more families in need.

These priorities require resources, collaboration and sustained commitment. Donations and partnerships can help make these services more accessible and strengthen the programme's ability to respond to community needs.

You Can Help Make the Next Story Different

Imagine a community where a person living with hypertension can access regular monitoring. Where a child identified as malnourished receives appropriate follow-up. Where families can seek medical attention without being overwhelmed by the cost.

This is the kind of progress we want to work toward.

The 1,004 people served during the August medical camp show what coordinated community action can achieve. The health challenges identified also remind us how much work remains.

You do not have to be a doctor to contribute to healthier communities. You can help through a financial donation, medical supplies, diagnostic equipment, professional expertise or a partnership that strengthens access to healthcare.

Every contribution can help build the capacity to serve, support and follow up with vulnerable members of our community.

Your donation can support the work needed to make future medical camps possible and help strengthen essential services beyond the camp itself. Every resource mobilized brings us closer to a community where access to healthcare is less dependent on a family's ability to pay.

Will You Stand With Us?

Vineyard CBO invites individuals, organizations, healthcare professionals, corporate partners and well-wishers to join us in strengthening community healthcare.

Together with Hope Venture and through community partnerships such as the medical camp hosted at Outreach Hope Church Huruma, we can continue working toward a future where vulnerable families receive not only medical attention, but also the follow-up and support they need.

1,004 people received medical attention. Help us reach more people, strengthen follow-up and build a healthier future for our community.
